Leda Garside

Through hands-on work with vineyard workers and collaboration with farmers and health care providers, Leda Garside has improved the delivery of health services to seasonal workers.  As Clinical Nurse Manager of !Salud!, a health-based outreach program offered through Tuality Healthcare, Leda has taken health education and health services to vineyard workers and their families. She has also given voice to the health care needs of her clients. The result, over a decade of work, has been improved health for seasonal workers and improved community commitment to delivering necessary services such as vaccinations, safety education including pesticide applicator training and certification, CPR, first aid, ergonomics and back safety. Having developed the trust of both farmers and vineyard workers, Leda has been able to help farmers meet OR-OHSA standards and also glean basic demographic information from vineyard workers to develop a data base for effective program planning. Utilizing her collaborative skills, Leda has been able to bring dental vans to the vineyards as well as hold wellness clinics at work sites where cholesterol, diabetes, and blood pressure screenings as well as cancer awareness sessions are provided. Through these efforts, seasonal workers have better access to care in a community partnership.  Leda was nominated for a Genius Award by Laurence Hornick, MD, Medical Imaging Group of Hillsboro and member of the Tuality Healthcare Foundation.

From serving wild salmon, emphasizing organic fruits and vegetables and replacing beef with bison, Nancy’s efforts to improve hospital food for patients, their families and staff have garnered national attention, including an article in May 2006 issue of Time magazine.
