2007 Recipients

Omolara Oluloro, graduated from Madison High School earlier this year with a 4.00 and is planning to attend the University of Portland in September 2007; where she will major in biochemistry and public health with a minor in international business with a scheduled completion date of May 2011.  She has been involved in a variety of volunteer and community activities including her current research of the demographics of HIV/AIDS in Multnomah County vs. National demographics.  She has also been involved in Student Government – serving as Student Body President in her high school; she has also been active in the Key Club, the National Honors Society and the Health Occupations Students of America organization, among other activities.  While she is an undergraduate, Omolara plans to participate in health related research. Her ultimate career goal is to attend medical school upon completion of college, with a focus on emergency room medicine.

Lindsey Reynolds, the recipient of a $5,000 Foster Scholarship in 2005, recently completed a master’s degree in International Health at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health and was accepted into the school’s PhD program in the Department of Health, Behavior and Society; and plans to complete the PhD program by May 2010.  She has been active in several Public Health driven organizations, including her current role as Co-President of the African Public Health Network and previous work in HIV prevention and orphan care programs in South Africa.  Her ultimate career goal is to use public health research to increase public awareness of and engagement in global health issues and inequities.

Beth Bolander, is currently pursuing a BSN at Linfield School of Nursing with a scheduled completion date of May 2008; upon receipt of a BSN, she plans to find work in public or community health while she pursues either an MPH or an advanced Nurse Practitioners degree.  She has volunteered and served in many Public Health-related activities, including her current role as Executive Director of the Oregon Student Nurses Association and her membership in the Linfield Student Nurses’ Association; last year, she did STI training in several classrooms at the Cleveland School-Based Health Center. Her ultimate career goal is to work as a Public Health Nurse in a rural area where she can see herself organizing her community to effect community-wide health changes.

Rebecca Bressman, is currently pursuing an MPH at Portland State University with a scheduled completion date of June 2009; upon receipt of an MPH, she plans to focus on the Primary Health and Health Care Disparities in Native American communities.  She has interned at two Native American related organizations:  NARA NW and Indian Health Service (PAO).  While in attendance at PSU, she has maintained a 3.75 GPA; having been on the Dean’s or President’s list multiple times and plans to maintain her impressive academic achievements during graduate school.   Her ultimate career goal is to work as an educator within her Native American community to educate, prevent the development and spread of disease and promote positive health outcomes.

Marlena Buen, is currently pursuing a BS at Linfield School of Nursing with a scheduled completion date of December 2007; upon receipt of her degree, she plans to work as a nurse with a focus on Community Health.  She has volunteered and served in many Public Health-related activities, including her previous work as an Early Childhood Specialist at Waverly Children’s Home and as an Assistant Teacher at the Rockcreek Early Intervention Preschool, among many other activities. Her ultimate career goal is to work as a nurse where she will further her work with children and their families, in addition to working with at-risk and under-served populations

Jennifer Holliday, the recipient of a $5,000 Foster scholarship in 2004, a $5,000 award in 2005 and a $7,500 award in 2006, is currently pursuing an MD and MPH at Oregon Health and Sciences University with a scheduled completion date of June 2008; upon receipt of her degree, she is committed to becoming a rural family physician, starting with a residency in Family Medicine.  She has volunteered and served in many Public Health-related activities, including volunteering at the Southwest Community Health Center, Wallace Medical Concern and the Bridge Peer Counseling Center (at Stanford University), among other activities. Her ultimate career goal is to work as an advocate, educator and researcher - to be a voice for the patient population she will serve.

Jacqui Martin, the recipient of a $1,000 Foster scholarship in 2005 and a $2,500 award in 2006, most recently obtained a BSN in June 2007; upon receipt of her BSN, she is continuing her education, pursuing a Nurse Practitioner degree.  She has volunteered and served in many Public Health-related activities, including her service at Girls Incorporated as a chaperone and prenatal care education at Sistah Care. Her ultimate career goal is to work as a Nurse Practitioner, specializing in adolescent sexual health, being the most skilled and effective advocate for her patients as possible.  In addition, Jacqui would like to research evidence-based practice in her field.
